You are the Light of the World
A chronic disability can quickly turn celebration into mourning and can shroud proud parents into shame.
One – year – 2 month – old Maisha Jannat was born in East Sarof Vata, Rangunia. She is the second born for her family.
Maisha was born with Cleft lip and cleft palate. Her parents were devastated when they saw the condition of their daughter; they only blame themselves. Her mother Jannatul Maoya said,
They consult many doctors for her treatment but due to their financial condition they were unable to pay for her vital surgery. One day they came to know about LMRF Children’s Hospital from a doctor. He also informed them that the treatment was totally Free of Cost. Hearing that, Maisha’s mother was overjoyed and anxious at the same time
The very next morning, Maisha’s mother came to LMRF Childern’s Hospital and was received with the usual warm welcome from the team. She was overwhelmed by the unexpected show of kindness. Her amazement grew as she progressed inside the hospital. She met Doctors, and came to know that they had performed thousands of cleft lip and palate surgeries through CureCleft Project. Maisha’s mother told them that “I was, however, worried about her cleft lip and palate. It was difficult to feed her and I was concerned about all the ridicule she might face in her life. The only way she could swallow food was by making her lie on her back and carefully feeding her with a spoon. The milk would leak through her cleft lip and palate if we tried to feed her in the sitting position”. After a brief examination of Maisha, doctor assured her that she could be operated on and her lip would be fine since she is a young child, the healing from the surgery will be quick and the scar minimal when she is a young woman.
Disabilities can destroy families, but at this story illustrates, healing changes everything. On her departure day from the hospital, a healthy Maisha was surrounded by the relatives who once shunned her, all of them proclaiming, “Truly there is God in the place of LMRF Children’s Hospital”.
